Anyone lucky enough to see Fallow or Axis Deer never forgets the
experience. Axis deer are a rich, reddish brown, with fawn-like spots that
they do not lose, even in adulthood. The male Axis deer is incredibly
majestic, with his beautiful antlers. In California, Axis deer live almost
entirely west of the Inverness Ridge in the Point Reyes area of Marin
County. However, when you hear someone say they think they've seen a
unicorn, chances are they have seen one of the stunning white Fallow deer.
Fallow deer live east of the Inverness Ridge, and range in color from white
to brown to black. Like the Axis deer, many of them are speckled. Both
species of deer have elegant forms and soft, gentle faces.
